The Freshman Composition Library Experience (FCLE)

The FCLE is designed to provide you with basic skills related to research & writing in the academy and focusses on the resources you will need to produce a freshman-level research paper. Many of you will be using either the Beacon Handbook or the Handbook for College Research. References to chapters and page numbers to these texts are included below.

ProQuest database proquest.pdf Why: Good for most topics; access to magazine, journal, newspaper citations.  
LexisNexis Academic  universe.pdf Why: Another general topic database; primarily full-text; access to magazine, journal; newspaper citations.  
Citing Electronic Resources e_citing.pdf Why: A supplement to information you may receive in your regular text; special sections on citing from ProQuest and Academic Universe B=32; App. 1 for APA style

Literature and Language Why: These are online databases that are the equivalent of reference books; not 'findable' on the net.

Individual objectives may be de-emphasized or emphasized, based on the individual teacher's requirements
  • Students will learn how to use online resources to help them CHOOSE -or- REFINE a topic for a traditional freshman comp research paper, and by extrapolation, learn how to ‘find out more’ about any topic of interest
  • Students will learn how to select and use the best online and traditional resources to support their topics
    • Resources will include
      • Traditional reference books
      • Online reference resources
      • The Online Catalog [LUIS]
      • Indexes to Articles (citation only, full-text, full-text & citation, articles only, various publication types
      • Specialized Library departments: TMMM & Government Documents, with media, print & online resources.
  • Students will develop a strategy/PROCESS and a timeline for completing the research component of the process (Library Research Planner)
  • Students will learn the difference between web/Internet-based resources (such as databases) and Internet sites reached by Search Engines
  • Students will learn how to evaluate Internet sites (primarily) and how to establish the authority of print resources (secondarily) [related to achieving critical thinking skills]
