ProQuest (generally
and its Social Sciences Plus and Education Complete databases) provides
access to journal articles on all topics in the social sciences, general
sciences, humanities and business from the 1990s to the present (some
earlier
coverage).
Sport
Discus (1975 to present) provides electronic access to articles
from journals, monographs, book analytics and theses on all aspects of
sport, fitness, and recreation (international coverage). Includes material
on
individuals and sports, coaching and administration, biomechanics,
sports medicine, exercise physiology, social science and sport, motor
learning,
and sport and people with disabilities; recreation management; therapeutic
recreation.
Physical Education Index (print only, Reference Z 6121
.P49),
1978 to the present. This is the most specific print resource for locating
magazine articles on physical education and recreation subjects; accesses
> 100 HPER journals; some overlap with Sports Discus
citations
will occur.
Education Index (print only Reference L 11 .E3) -- 1929 to
the
present. Use this index to supplement ERIC
or to search topics before 1966 (when ERIC indexing began). Accesses
articles
from 344 educational journals; topics such as Title IX, ethical aspects
of sports, teaching aids and devices for physical education,
special
education, child development, etc.
Medline
via PubMed (from 1986 to present) -- Use for sports medicine and
related topics; this is the main index to medical materials and is the
online version of
Index Medicus.
PsycInfo
(1887 to present, the online version of Psychological
Abstracts),
provides international coverage of journal articles and books in all
fields
of psychology; topics include athletic participation, athletic
training,
childhood play behavior, leisure time; therapeutic recreation; specific
sports, etc.
ABI/Inform (via ProQuest)--
this database provides coverage of business-related journal articles,
including
such topics as sports & recreation clubs; professional sports;
market
research, etc. See also Academic
Universe for general as well as business coverage.
SocioFiles(1974
to present), electronic version of Sociological Abstracts; provides
access to citations from journals and disserations on sociological aspects
of such topics as delinquency prevention, sociology of leisure,
recreational
facilities, etc.
Columbia International Affairs
Online
International (1972/1976 to present ; or Reference JA 1 .P8, 1915 to
1992 print). Coverage concentrates on the social sciences, political
science,
etc. HPER topics covered include advertising, discrimination, school
sports, sports facilities; and the leisure market.
Criminal
Justice Abstracts (1968 to the present) and the
Index to Legal
Periodicals (Reference KF8 .I5x) cites journal articles, books,
publications
of government and non-governmental agencies; topics such
as prison recreation,
community crime prevention, juvenile delinquency prevention and
recreation.
Completed Research in Health, Physical Education and
Recreation
from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation
(Reference Z 6121 .A62, 1955 to the present) This resource provides access
to magazine articles (through 1981) and to masters' theses and
dissertations.
Dissertation
Abstracts
International (1876-present) -- doctoral dissertations from most
major universities; helpful in determining the scope/extent of completed
research; citations include abstract/description of dissertation; it is
sometimes possible to obtain the actual dissertation via Interlibrary
Loan.
