Finding Library Materials:Keyword Searching

Searching for specific types of music-related materials in an online catalog can be much easier and quicker if you know your Keyword search option.

For example, in the ISU Online Catalog {LUIS}, you can select Keyword searching and then click on Set More Options to discover how to limit your Keyword searches to:

  • Location [e.g., Main Library or Music Listening Library]
  • Medium [e.g., Sound Recording or videorecording]
  • Item type [e.g., Music score, Non-musical recording, musical recording
In addition to using the Set More Options, you can also design searches on the main Keyword screen such as:
  • Mozart AND sound
  • Mozart AND music
  • Mozart AND scores
  • Mozart AND full score?
  • Mozart NOT {voice or piano}
  • Thematic catalogs AND {composer}
  • Thematic catalogs AND {type of music}
  • Music AND thesis

SEARCH TIPS

If you haven’t used IIMP before, from the opening page, click on Help. Help topics include:

Search Fields, Browse Indexes, Boolean Searching, Proximity Searching, Truncation, Searching, Customizing Search Results, Brief Citations, Full Citation, Navigating the Full Citation

You can search a variety of ways, including All Keywords, Title Keyword, Author, Subject Categories, Subject Terms, Document Type, Publication, Language, Country of Publication, Publication Date

After filling in your search parameters, click on the Search button at the bottom of the page to activate your search.

Results will appear in a Brief Citation; click on each for the Full Citation.

Email is not built in. You'll have to have your email account open and then cut/paste into citations, articles, etc. and send. If you have logged via your MyISU network account, you can also simply open up Word and cut/paste and save.

Once you have finished your search, check the online catalog {LUIS} for local holdings. Do title searches for the journals, not the individual articles. Use Interlibrary Loan’s electronic forms to request materials not locally available.

The Music Index [ v.1 to v.43. 1949 to 1992; 1994-1999] at Reference ML 118 .M84 is international in scope and provides subject and author access to magazine articles, dissertations and book reviews in all areas of the music field. Prior to 1949 you may have some success with Humanities Index at Reference AI 3 .H8x [online version for more recent dates]

Music Index SEARCH TIPS

A. Locating Information by Subject:   Consult an issue of the Subject Heading List (shelved with the monthly issues). You can use the subjects listed here to locate articles from any of the annual volumes as well.

The main section, as illustrated by the excerpt below, lists correct subject headings. You will also be referred to related headings ("see also" or "(sa)" and from incorrect to correct subjects ("see" or "(s)". "X" indicates various forms of cross-references.

Once you have located potential subject headings, proceed to the regular issues/volumes of Music Index to locate citations to books or magazine articles

B. Locating Information by Composer:   Composers will not be listed in the "Subject Headings List." Simply look under the last name of your composer. C. Using The Music Index:   Look up citations by subject, composer or author. Sometimes your subject/composer will be divided into subheadings, such as "works", "United States", etc.

Write down the complete citation (i.e., article title, journal title, volume, page(s), date). Look up abbreviations to journal titles (in CAPITAL LETTERS) in the section in the front of each issue, Periodicals Indexed (in alphabetical order according to the abbreviations used to identify them), usually color-coded pages in the front of each issue. You must determine the full name of the journal before you leave the Index.

Look up lower case (descriptive) abbreviations in the section "Abbreviations and Terms" [also in color-coded section].

Check to see if ISU owns the journal by entering a title search (t=) in the online catalog {LUIS}. Note that the location (bound, microfilm, or current) is related to the volume/date of the issue you need.

If you wish to examine books, in addition to reading the reviews cited from them, you may also use the online catalog to look them up by author or title. Books or magazine articles listed in The Music Index which are not available at this library can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

For citations referring you to Dissertation Abstracts (DIS ABST), please be aware that this is another online resource. Caution: DA will provide you with a description of the dissertation; libraries do not normally have dissertations other than those from their own institution; in rare cases it may be possible to get a dissertation via Interlibrary Loan. RILM Abstracts of Music Literature. Edited by Barry S. Brook. New York: International RILM Center, 1967, volumes 1-30, 1967-1996. (Ref/ML1/.I83). Available online elsewhere but not at ISU.

Access to Materials beyond the ISU Library

The ISU Library will not always have the materials you need. The sooner you begin your research, the sooner you will discover what materials, if any, you need to get from somewhere else. You have several options:

Online Catalogs Within Indiana: Use the Other Libraries links explore other Indiana college libraries. Your Sycamore ID allows you check-out privileges at these universities, if you choose to go in person. Return materials to the ISU Library Interlibrary Loan Office and we will return them for you (be sure to do this well in advance of the other library’s due date)

WorldCat: Is your main source for comprehensive library collection searching. When searching for music materials, just as in the ISU Online Catalog, you have some choices you can make to enhance your search results. For example, from the Basic Search screen, use the Limit type to connection to show document limit type options. You'll have check-box option for Sound recordings and Music scores. Under Subtype limit you can select Music. Additional options include:

Basic search --> Format:
CD audio
Cassette recording
LP recording
VHS
DVD
Advanced search:
‘musical composition’
Language

WorldCat has a direct Interlibrary Loan option built-in as well as Print/Save. You can print lists of libraries that have the materials as well as the bibliographic records.

ArticleFirst (OCLC) and Ingenta: Both of these electronic databases let you search for journal articles from a large selection of journals. FirstSearch searches articles in 12,500 periodicals allows you to email your interlibrary loan request directly to the ISU Interlibrary Loan Office. Ingenta allows you to search 17,000 periodical titles, and then email the citations to yourself. Check the Online Catalog {LUIS} for local holdings. Use ISU's electronic Interlibrary Loan forms to request materials.

ISU Interlibrary Loan: Electronic Interlibrary Loan is available online.
Average turnaround time is 7-10 working days, so plan accordingly. Some limits to the number of requests per person per week do apply; for more information, inquire in the Interlibrary Loan office (open 8-4:30, Monday -Friday). Pick up materials at the Check-out Desk.
