The Axe Man Cometh

Patrick Nuttall is a most interesting person.  When you first meet Pat you think that he is a very nice quiet guy.  Well, that is partially true.  Then there is the other Pat; no it is not an evil twin kind of thing!  He plays in a rock/country band most weekends.  That’s hard to believe if you don’t know Pat well.  If you know him well, you know that music is Pat’s first love.  The band he plays with is called The Southland Band.  The group plays clubs throughout Indiana and Illinois.  Maybe you have seen them play at different functions here on campus too.  Patrick is their lead axe (guitar) man.  He also sings as part of this group.  See The Southland Band’s website http://www.southlandband.net.  If you are interested in music, Pat is your man.  He can fill you in on whatever you want to know on just about any musical subject you can name.  We have even used him to answer Reference questions about music.

Pat is a Terre Hautean by birth and graduated from South High School, he played in their marching band, concert band, orchestra and jazz band.  He started playing a trombone early on, but in the junior high band he played flute and the tuba.  In the high school band he played tuba, flute and saxophone.   I asked him when he was first interested in music or what had influenced him to take up a musical instrument.  He said that he could remember that this dad was interested in music and sports and played a harmonica.  Pat said that by 5th grade that he was playing ukulele and guitar and of course he played harmonica.  Oh yes, he picked up the piano and oboe while in college, just for fun of course.

Pat loves record collecting.  He has quite an extensive collection of vintage rock, classical and ethnic music.  He collects both CD’s and vinyl.  Darla says that he has the largest collection of T-shirts of anyone she knows.  Pat also plays from time to time at his church; Saint Joe’s University Parish.

Patrick has worked in the Library now for approximately 20 years, proof that time flies when you are having fun.  As a student he was a music performance major at ISU.   He worked for four years as a student assistant in Circulation, Shelving, Reserves and Periodicals. He then became a full-time staff member and has been staff here for 16 years.  As a staff member he started working a split position in Acquisitions and Periodicals.  Since 1996 he has been full-time in Acquisitions verifying invoices for all materials ordered and that’s a big job.

CML is very lucky that the Music Library didn’t hire him, because that’s where he first applied for a job.  Pat said that he is glad he got hired here instead of the Music Library because we have more people and activity here.   So my best advice is if you want to hear some really good music, find out where Pat’s next gig is and go - Pat Rocks!
