Popular article authors are usually journalists or members of the publication staff. Sometimes, they are free-lance authors paid for the article. They generally are not experts in the field they are writing about. Their credentials are not listed, so the reader has no way to verify the author's expertise on the topic. Sometimes, the article is unsigned.

Substantive News/General Interest articles are usually written by the editorial staff of the publication or a free-lance writer paid for the article. Sometimes, a scholar is the author of the article. The credentials of the author are not listed. Often, the name of the author may not be listed with the article. Again, there is usually no way to verify the credentials of the author.

The names of authors of Sensational articles are often not printed. The writers can be staff or free-lance; they are not considered experts on the topics they write about.
