Tip #1: Search Terms

In this tip, you will learn how to determine the words and phrases that reflect your information needs. Think about various ways in which you can identify your subject areas. Identify key concepts and terms by asking relevant questions about the variables that exist in your research question.

For example, these questions might be asked in regards to research on plagiarism:

  • How widespread is the problem of academic plagiarism in America's colleges and universities.
  • Which technologies that actually promote plagiarism are available to students?
  • Which technologies are available to catch students who plagiarize?
  • What other methods are being used to successfully combat or deter plagiarism and cheating?
